Gopāla (English spelling) Gopala

...a dynasty that ruled Bengal, India, from the mid-8th century to the 12th century. During the "chaotic state of the survival of the fittest" in which small countries were divided after the death of Harsha Vardhana, Gopala (reigned c. 750-770) unified Bengal and ascended to the throne. His son Dharmapala (reigned c. 770-810) added Bihar to his territory and advanced as far as Kannauj, becoming the largest power in India. From this time on, they competed for supremacy in India with the Pratihara dynasty in the west and the Rashtrakuta dynasty in the Deccan.
