…When he grew up, he went to Edo for a time to become a sumo wrestler, but returned to his village and became a subordinate of Bunkichi of Hitachishiba-juku, and succeeded him as the big boss along the Tone River. In a turf dispute, he fought a duel on the banks of the Tone River with Iioka Sukegoro, aided by the gangster Hirate Miki, and was later assassinated by Sukegoro. In the rakugo and rokyoku story Tenpo Suikoden, he is portrayed as a good guy. …

…He was a brilliant student at the Chiba Dojo in Otamagaike, Kanda, Edo, but was expelled and became a wanderer, traveling around the country teaching swordsmanship. He met the gambler boss Shigezo in Sasagawa, Shimousa, and became his guest. He was wounded all over his body in a sword duel at the banks of the Tone River, and later died. This image of Hirate Zoshu was created in the storytelling and rokyoku work Tenpo Suikoden. …
