Class Holothuria, Order Scutellaria, Family Holothuridae. A large sea cucumber that can reach a body length of up to 35 cm, with rounded ends, a flat ventral surface, and a white body surface with scattered peculiar snake-eye-like markings. The markings are 0.4-0.7 cm in diameter, and consist of a black spot surrounded by a yellow circle and a black ring around it, but sometimes adjacent markings fuse together to form a large pattern. There are 20 tentacles, and the calcareous ring is made up of 10 bony plates. The tube feet are on the ventral surface and are also scattered among the dorsal warts. The bone fragments on the body surface are flower-patterned, and those on the dorsal surface are finer and more complex than those on the ventral surface. It is widely distributed in the coral reef areas of the western Pacific Ocean south of Amami Oshima. In Amami Oshima, they are boiled and dried to make edible sea cucumbers (sardines).
