〘Noun〙① Bonito flesh that has been stripped of its flesh, steamed, roasted over a fire, and then dried and hardened. It is shaved thinly and used to make soup stock or to sprinkle on dishes. It is famous for being produced in Kochi Prefecture, Kagoshima Prefecture, and Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture. Katsubushi. Hoshigatsuo. Kare-gatsuo. *Torahirohon Kyogen Sakka (late Muromachi period - early modern period) "This morning I have brought along dried sea bream, dried mackerel, dried bonito flakes, and other snacks for breakfast."② (① comes from the fact that it is hard and can be shaved and eaten) A metaphor for a samurai who is loyal and sets aside personal desires to serve his lord. ※Kanazoshi Yobikake (1665) 1 "A good warrior is one who has mastered the art of archery and horsemanship, honed his sense of righteousness, placed faith above all else, and cast away his selfish desires. He is also known as someone who uses his wits to get ahead of people." ③ (From the use of a dull sword to sharpen ①) A metaphor for a dull warrior. ※Zappai, Kagariku Tonsaku (1709) "A warrior who is separated from his wife and carries a stick on his shoulder." ④ (A play on the use of "dashi") Refers to something that is used as an excuse. ※Tangihon, Tsurezure Mikagawa (1783) 2 "On the 30th day of the New Year , the maid's son's visit to the shrine was so good that he couldn't stand it."

〘名〙 (「かつおぶし(鰹節)」の変化した語)① =かつおぶし(鰹節)①※洒落本・傾城買二筋道(1798)夏の床「内へかいるとお袋の小ごとがある。鰹節(カツフシ)壱本でもらう気はねへが」② へたな義太夫節をあざけっていう語。※浮世草子・当世芝居気質(1777)一「太夫の咽に合やうにえみぜぬ新節、鰹節(カツブシ)の太夫共運蔵ならでともてはやす」
