[1] 〘Noun〙① ("井" is a place where spring water can be pumped up) A well that gushes out from between rocks. Or, a well surrounded by stones. Ishii. ② = Water of Iwai (Iwai)①※Shin Kokin (1205) Summer 280 "The autumn evening dew that knots the grass around Iwai crosses the sandalwood and forms a knot (Fujiwara Kanezane)" [2][1] A place name in the southwestern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. Former city name. Incorporated as a city in 1972. Merged with Sarushima-cho in 2005 to become Bandō City. [2] A district in the northeastern part of Tottori Prefecture. In the early modern period, it was renamed from Kono District and established. In 1896 , it was merged with Iwami District and disappeared.

[1] 〘名〙① (「井」はわき水をくみ上げることができるようにした場所) 岩の間からわき出る泉を井としたもの。または、周囲を石で囲んだ井。いしい。② =いわい(岩井)の水①※新古今(1205)夏・二八〇「岩井くむあたりのをざさ玉こえてかつがつ結ぶ秋の夕露〈藤原兼実〉」[2][一] 茨城県南西部の地名。旧市名。昭和四七年(一九七二)市制。平成一七年(二〇〇五)猿島町と合併して坂東市となる。[二] 鳥取県の北東端にあった郡。近世初期、巨濃(この)郡が改称して成立。明治二九年(一八九六)岩美郡に統合されて消滅。
