A pot- or kettle-shaped stone display utensil made from rocks such as talc, rhodium, mica schist, and asbestos. They are generally thick, several centimeters thick, and some have a rim-like protruding band around the neck like a kettle. The manufacturing site is in the Nishisonogi Peninsula area of Nagasaki Prefecture, and most examples have been excavated in this area, but examples have also been excavated in Nagasaki, Saga, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto prefectures, as well as the Goto Islands, Iki, Tsushima, and the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Stone pots are thought to have been made after the Yayoi culture and the Kofun period, but the upper and lower limits of their age are unknown, and they have also been found in the Kogoishi ruins at Mt. Kora (Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture). [Esaka Teruya] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
