Born: August 28, 1910, Sklarbrandt [Died] February 26, 1985. New Haven, Connecticut. American economist born in the Netherlands. Studied at Utrecht University and Leiden University. Became a lecturer at the Netherlands School of Economics in 1936, and worked for the League of Nations in 1938. He defected to the United States during World War II and became a naturalized citizen in 1946. After working as a lecturer at New York University, he became a researcher at the Coles Commission at the University of Chicago in 1944, and as its director from 1948 onwards, contributed greatly to the development of the field of econometrics during and after the war. He served as director of the Coles Foundation from 1961 to 1967, and was professor at various universities, member of various academic societies, and officer. In 1975, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences along with LV Kantorovich for his contributions to the theory of optimal resource allocation. His major works include "Statistical Inference in Dynamic Economic Models" (1950), "Activity Analysis of Production and Allocation" (51), and "Three Essays on the State of Economic Science" (57). He has also published numerous papers and books on econometrics, linear economics, and general equilibrium theory.
