Irenaeus - Irenaeus (English spelling)

Bishop of Lyon, a representative anti-Gnostic father and biblical theologian of the 2nd century. Probably from Smyrna in Asia Minor. He is said to have heard the sermons of Polycarpos (c. 70-c. 156), a disciple of John the Apostle, as a child. He was a great pastor of souls who testified to the orthodox and universal truth of the Church based on revelation and apostolic tradition, rather than a philosophical apologist against pagans like Justin the Martyr. He is also important as the first person to consider most of the New Testament documents today as "Scripture" like the Old Testament. His works include "Against Heresies" and "Verification of the Apostolic Sermons," the former of which is an extremely valuable historical source for understanding the situation of the church in the 2nd century and the heretical ideas of Gnosticism.

リヨンの司教、2世紀の代表的な反グノーシス教父、聖書神学者。おそらく小アジアのスミルナの出身。幼少のころ使徒ヨハネの弟子ポリカルポスPolykarpos（70ころ―156ころ）の説教を聞いたという。彼は、殉教者ユスティノスのような異教徒に対する哲学的弁証家であるよりも、啓示と使徒的伝承に立脚して正統にして普遍的な教会の真理を証(あか)した偉大な魂の牧者であった。また、今日の新約諸文書のほとんどを『旧約聖書』同様に「聖書」とみなした最初の人物としても重要である。著作には『異端反駁(はんばく)』と『使徒的説教の証明』とがあり、ことに前者は、2世紀の教会の状況やグノーシス主義的異端思想を知るうえにも、きわめて貴重な史料である。
