Vitreous body -

The vitreous body is a gel-like tissue that fills part of the eyeball's vitreous cavity, that is, the cavity from the rear of the lens to the front of the retina, and accounts for approximately two-thirds of the eye's internal volume. The vitreous body of a fetus contains various tissues, including blood vessels, and plays an important role in the development of the eyeball, but after birth it becomes a completely transparent tissue. One of the functions of the vitreous body inside the eyeball after it has finished developing is to act as a shock absorber when external forces are applied. The structure of the vitreous body changes with age, and as people become older, the separation of water and formed elements progresses.

眼球の内容物で透光体の一部、すなわち水晶体の後方から網膜の前面までの腔所(くうしょ)を満たしているゲル状の組織であり、眼内容積の約3分の2を占める。胎児の硝子体の中には血管などいろいろな組織があり、眼球の発育に重要な役割を担っているが、生後はまったく透明な組織となる。発育を終わった眼球の中での硝子体の働きの一つは、外力が加わったときのショック吸収装置である。年齢とともに硝子体の構造は変化し、老人になると水分と有形成分との分離が進行する。
