The first Ilkhan, Hulagu, and the successive Ilkhans (Turkish for "kings of a country") recognized the sovereignty of the Yuan Dynasty and maintained friendly relations with it, while confronting the armies of the Kipchak and Chagatai Khanates that invaded the borderlands, and on the other hand, in the conflict with the Mamluk Sultanate over Syria, they allied with Christian countries and the Pope.
