A number that is considered sacred or abhorred. In Japan, the principle is influenced by Chinese thought, which holds that odd numbers are yang and even numbers are yin, but this does not necessarily coincide with customs. Odd numbers are interpreted as numbers that cannot be divided, meaning that they continue on forever, while even numbers are divisible and mean nothing, making them taboo numbers. In addition, numbers such as 4 and 9 are linked to words such as death and suffering, and are considered taboo numbers. Furthermore, the number 8 (the number 8 in Japanese) is likely associated with the idea of a spreading out shape, and is therefore considered a sacred number. In general, odd numbers are often considered taboo numbers.

神聖視したり，忌み嫌ったりする数をいう。日本では，その原理には奇数を陽，偶数を陰とする中国思想の影響もあるが，習俗のなかでは必ずしも一致していない。奇数は割切れない数として無限に継続することを意味し，偶数は割切れるものとして無を意味するものと解釈され，忌数とした。このほか4，9などは，死，苦などの言葉につながり，忌数とされてきた。また八百万 (やおよろず) の神などは，八の字形から末広がりの意を連想し，聖数としたものであろう。一般には奇数を忌数とすることが多い。
