A marine fish of the family Acanthidae in the order Perciformes. It is commonly found along the coast of Japan from central Honshu southward. It has many local names, such as Naminoko in Tokyo, Mebutojako in Hiroshima, and Bubuuzakko in Kumamoto. In Wakaura, Wakayama, it is called Hotarujako, but this is a mixed name with a fish of a different family. Ishimochi in Kochi and Nagasaki, and Ishimochijako in Hiroshima, are named after the large otoliths they have. A different species from Ishimochi of the family Sciaenidae. スズキ目テンジクダイ科の海産魚。本州中部以南の日本沿岸でふつうに見られる。地方名も多く,東京都でナミノコ,広島県でメブトジャコ,熊本県でブウブウザッコなどがある。和歌山県和歌浦でホタルジャコと呼ばれるが,別科の魚との混称である。高知県,長崎県のイシモチ,広島県のイシモチジャコは,大きな耳石(じせき)をもっていることに由来する。ニベ科のイシモチとは別種。全長10cmに達する。背部は淡褐色で,体側には約10本の褐色の横帯がある。
