A fraternity is an association or group of American or Canadian college students formed for a common purpose or interest, and usually membership is only possible through solicitation by the group. It is basically an association for men only, and similar groups for female students are called sororities. The word fraternity comes from the Latin frater, meaning "brother," and its origins can be traced back to the colleges of medieval Europe and England.
