Also known as Kuroezo. An evergreen tall tree of the Pinaceae family. It grows in temperate to subarctic regions of Hokkaido and Northeast Asia. The bark is gray-brown to blackish brown with deep fissures. The leaves are linear, flat, pointed, and grayish-white on the underside. In early summer, it produces red male flowers and purple female flowers. It is monoecious. The cones are cylindrical, slightly drooping, and ripen to a yellowish brown. A variant is the Japanese spruce. The closely related Picea glehnii grows on Mt. Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture and in Hokkaido. The bark is reddish brown. The leaves are linear, thick, short, and the cones ripen to a dark purple color.
