Japanese: エゾマツ

Also known as Kuroezo. An evergreen tall tree of the Pinaceae family. It grows in temperate to subarctic regions of Hokkaido and Northeast Asia. The bark is gray-brown to blackish brown with deep fissures. The leaves are linear, flat, pointed, and grayish-white on the underside. In early summer, it produces red male flowers and purple female flowers. It is monoecious. The cones are cylindrical, slightly drooping, and ripen to a yellowish brown. A variant is the Japanese spruce. The closely related Picea glehnii grows on Mt. Hayachine in Iwate Prefecture and in Hokkaido. The bark is reddish brown. The leaves are linear, thick, short, and the cones ripen to a dark purple color. Both species are used for building, equipment, musical instruments, and pulp, and the trees are used as garden trees, bonsai, and Christmas trees.

クロエゾとも。マツ科の常緑高木。北海道，北東アジアの温〜亜寒帯にはえる。樹皮は灰褐色ないし黒褐色で深い割れ目ができる。葉は線形で平たく先端がとがり，下面は灰白色をなす。初夏，紅色の雄花と紫色の雌花をつける。雌雄同株。球果は円柱形でやや下垂し黄褐色に熟する。変種にトウヒがある。近縁のアカエゾマツは岩手県早池峰(はやちね)山，北海道にはえる。樹皮は赤褐色。葉は線形で太く短く，球果は暗紫色に熟する。ともに材は建築，器具，楽器，パルプとし，樹は庭木，盆栽，クリスマス・ツリーとする。
