Pastoral Letters

A collective term for three letters in the New Testament: First Timothy, Second Timothy, and Titus. This name has been used since the 18th century because the contents are instructions on "pastoral care" (leading and running the church). Although technically they are considered Pauline epistles, today they are considered not to have been written by Paul himself, in terms of terminology, style, and ideas. Rather, the method of imitating Paul's words and actions while teaching lessons for clergy to fulfill their duties and Hellenistic civic ethics reflects the state of the church, which was quite well organized.

『新約聖書』のなかにある「第一テモテ書」「第二テモテ書」「テトス書」の三つの手紙の総称。内容が「牧会」（教会の指導・運営）にかかる指示であるため、18世紀以来この名称が用いられてきた。形のうえではパウロ書簡ということになっているが、今日では、用語、文体、思想などの点からみて、パウロが直接書いたものではないと判断されている。むしろ、パウロの言行に倣いつつ、聖職者が職分を果たすための教訓やヘレニズム的市民倫理を説く手法は、かなり組織化の進んだ教会の状況を反映している。
