Yoshizaki

Japanese:
Yoshizaki
The name of a place in the northern part of Awara City, Fukui Prefecture. It is generally called "Yoshizaki" now. In the past, it belonged to Hosorogi-go, Kawaguchi Manor, Echizen Province, which was the territory of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara (Kasuga Shrine's Sutra Collection), and in the entry for July 14, 1470 (2nd year of Bunmei), "Daijo-in Temple and Shrine Miscellaneous Records," it appears as "Yoshizaki Village" in the "Names of Villages Within Kawaguchi Manor." After suffering persecution on Mount Hiei, the 8th abbot of Hongan-ji Temple, Rennyo, took refuge in places such as Honpuku-ji Temple in Katada, Omi (present-day Otsu City), and in 1471, he went down to Yoshizakiyama (commonly known as Goyama) and founded Yoshizaki Gobo, which became the center of religious education in the Hokuriku region. Possible reasons for Rennyo's choice of this place include his blood relationship with Kyogaku, the head priest of Kofuku-ji Daijo-in Temple, the lord of Hosoroki-go, and the invitation of Wada Honkaku-ji Temple (present-day Eiheiji-cho, Fukui Prefecture), the head priest of Hosoroki-go. Yoshizakiyama is a low hill with an elevation of just over 32m, but it is surrounded by Lake Kitagata on three sides and is a fortified location with the mountainous region on the Kaga-Etchu border to the northeast, giving the Gobo temple a strong castle-like feel. Rennyo stayed in Yoshizaki for about four years and two months, and left in 1475 due to increasing pressure from Togashi Masachika, the guardian of Kaga Province. However, during this time he made an effort to spread his faith by providing followers who gathered there with Buddhist scriptures (messages) written in kana and publishing the Shoshinge and Sanjo Washan. As a result, the Honganji sect was rapidly formed throughout the Hokuriku region, and the foundations were laid for the Ikko Ikki uprising. After Rennyo left, Yoshizaki Gobo was maintained by Wada Hongakuji and others, but was destroyed in the Hokuriku Ikki of 1506. Because of the fighting between the eastern and western factions during reconstruction in the 1670s, the top of the mountain is now shared land, and the Yoshizaki branch temples of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji school are located at Yoshizakiura at the foot of the mountain, and the Shinshu Otani school are located at Higashi Mido. At the Otani branch temple, the Yoshizaki Goki ceremony is held every year for ten days from late April to early May, during which a portrait of Rennyo, which has been carried in a palanquin by followers from Higashi Honganji in Kyoto along the old Hokkoku route, is displayed. →Rennyo Kana Hogo
