Poet and Japanese literature scholar. Born in Himeji. Originally surnamed Matsuoka. His younger brothers were folklorist Kunio Yanagita and painter Eikyu Matsuoka. He was adopted by doctor Sekihei Inoue, graduated from the Imperial University School of Medicine, and became famous as an ophthalmologist. He also studied under Matsunami Sukeyuki and others, and was known as a fresh and elegant Keien school poet, becoming a member of the Utadokoro Yoriudo. He was also friends with Mori Ogai and others, and together they founded the Tokiwakai poetry group. His poetry collections include "Nantensou Poetry Collection" (1926), but in his later years he was absorbed in studying the "Man'yoshu" and "Fudoki," and published "Man'yoshu New Thoughts" and others.
