…After wandering around the world, he moved to Canada in 1937 and lived near Vancouver until 1954. He suffered from severe alcoholism and paranoia, and only managed to publish two works during his lifetime: the somewhat autobiographical Ultramarine (1933) and Beneath the Volcano (1947), a novel about the downfall of an alcoholic diplomat set against the backdrop of Mexican scenery. After his death, he published a collection of short stories, Lord, Hear from Thy Dwelling Place (1961), as well as Selected Poems (1962) edited by E. Burney and Selected Letters (1965) edited by the widow of Laurie. …
