An African carnivorous mammal of the Mustelidae family that resembles a skunk and emits a foul-smelling substance from its anal glands (illustration). Its body is black with white stripes, making it very conspicuous. It is found from Libya and Sudan to South Africa. Its body length is 28-38.5 cm, its tail length is 20-30.5 cm, and its weight is 420-1400 g. During the day, it hides alone in rock holes, tree hollows, self-digged burrows, or under floors of houses, and is active at night, feeding primarily on mice and insects, as well as bird eggs, snakes, and other small animals.
