A deciduous tall tree of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae), it can reach a height of 12 meters. The young branches and leaves are hairy. The bark is grayish-white and smooth. The leaves are alternate, ovate or oblong, 4-8 cm long, and have duplicato serrated edges. There are 12-15 pairs of lateral veins. It is monoecious and blooms at the same time as the new shoots open. The male flowers droop, while the female flowers form green spikes at the ends of the branches, which hang down in autumn as fruit spikes. The bracts of the fruit spike are somewhat sparse and contain nuts at the base. It is similar to the red carpinus, but the carpinus can be distinguished by its hairy leaves and the fact that the young branches and leaves are not red. It is commonly found in the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula and China.
