...Poetry is written on it, and the oldest work of kaishi is Fujiwara no Sukemasa's "Kakusui Hana Kougo" written in 969 (Anwa 2) in the mid-Heian period. Many waka kaishi with waka poems written on them have been handed down since the end of the Heian period, but the most famous are the "Ipponkyo Waka Kaishi" (late Heian period) by Saigyo and Fujiwara no Yorisuke, and the "Kumano Kaishi" (1198-1199) of a waka poetry gathering held by Emperor Gotoba and his close retainers on his pilgrimage to the Kumano Sanzan.
