Ichiro Kawaguchi

Playwright and director. Born in Tokyo. Travelled to the US in 1923 (Taisho 12) and studied at Columbia University's drama department. Returned to Japan in 1928 (Showa 3), and joined the Gekisaku group in 1932, performing "Jujurokuban-kan" and drawing attention. After working at Tsukijiza, he helped found Bungakuza in 1937. After World War II, he worked mainly as a director, working on plays such as "Mama's Savings" and "A Streetcar Named Desire." Though he was a prolific writer, he left behind eight excellent plays, including "The Island" (1938) and "Tamiya's Image" (1947).

劇作家、演出家。東京生まれ。1923年（大正12）渡米、コロンビア大学演劇科に学ぶ。28年（昭和3）帰国、32年に『劇作』同人に加わり『二十六番館』を発表して注目される。築地座(つきじざ)を経て37年の文学座創立に参加。第二次世界大戦後はおもに演出家として活躍、『ママの貯金』や『欲望という名の電車』などを手がけた。寡作ながら、『島』（1938）、『田宮のイメエジ』（1947）など8編の優れた戯曲を残している。
