Brown adipose tissue

Japanese: 褐色脂肪組織

Abbreviated as BAT. It is a unique brown adipose tissue whose constituent fat cells are rich in mitochondria, and the inner membrane of these mitochondria contains a specific protein called uncoupling protein (UCP), which transports H ⁺ and eliminates the electrical potential difference, oxidizing the substrate without producing ATP to generate heat. This is thought to be for the purpose of maintaining body temperature. In humans, it is common in infants and extremely rare in adults. It is distributed near the hip joints and scapulae.

BATと略す．褐色を呈する独特の脂肪組織で，構成する脂肪細胞はミトコンドリアに富み，そのミトコンドリアの内膜にアンカップリングタンパク質 (UCP) とよばれる特有のタンパク質が存在してH^＋を輸送し，電位差ポテンシャルを解消してしまうため，ATPを生成することなく基質を酸化して発熱する．体温維持のためと考えられる．ヒトでは乳児に多く，成人ではきわめて少ない．股関節，肩胛骨の近くなどに分布．
