Ichiyama style

Japanese: 市山流 - いちやまりゅう

A school of Japanese dance. It was established in Osaka by Segawa Jogo I, a leading actor turned choreographer, who took the name Ichiyama Shichijuro. It is currently found in Niigata and Tokyo. (1) The Niigata Ichiyama school is descended from Iwai Nakasuke, a disciple of the second Shichijuro, who took the name of the third. The school has been headed by women for generations, and they take the name Ichiyama Nasorou. After the death of the fifth Shichijuro in 1968, his daughter, the third Ichiyama Nasorou, succeeded the sixth head of the school, and the fifth's grandson took the name of the fourth Shichijurou and became the head of the school. (2) The Tokyo Ichiyama school was founded by Shichikichi, a disciple of the third Shichijuro, who established a separate school. Other schools that are branches of the Niigata Ichiyama school include the Konao school of the fifth Ichiyama Konao, the Matsu school of the sixth Ichiyama Matsusen, and the Seiha school of Ichiyama Shoei.

日本舞踊の一流派。立役の俳優から振付師になった1世瀬川如皐 (じょこう) が市山七十郎 (しちじゅうろう) を名のって大坂で樹立した流派。現在新潟と東京にある。 (1) 新潟の市山流は，2世七十郎の門弟岩井仲助が3世を名のり，その流れをくむ。代々女の家元で，市山七十郎 (なそろう) を名のる。 1968年5世七十郎没後，娘の3世市山七十世が6世宗家を継承，5世の孫が4世七十世を名のり家元となった。 (2) 東京の市山流は3世七十郎の門弟七十吉が別派を興したのに始る。ほかに新潟市山流の分家格である5世市山小直の小直派，6世市山松扇の松派，市山松栄の正派がある。
