Aizuwakamatsu [city] - Aizuwakamatsu
A city in western Fukushima Prefecture. It was incorporated as Wakamatsu City in 1899 and renamed in 1955. It occupies the southern part of the Aizu Basin and the mountainous area to the south, facing Lake Inawashiro to the east. The central city area, which developed in the basin, began with the construction of a castle by the Ashina clan in 1384, and was ruled by Gamo Ujisato, who built Tsuruga Castle in 1590, and the Uesugi clan, and later became a castle town of the Matsudaira clan of the Aizu domain. The castle and the city were burned down during the Aizu War, but traces of the castle town remain. It is the center of the Aizu region, and is connected by the Ban'etsu West Line and the Ban'etsu Expressway, and the Tadami Line and Aizu Railway branch off here. In addition to traditional home industries such as Aizu lacquerware and sake, modern industries, mainly IC manufacturing, are also developing. It is a prolific rice producer, and is known for its medicinal carrots and oysters. The city is blessed with nature and historical sites, including the ruins of Tsuruga Castle (historic site), Mt. Iimori, famous for the Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps), and Higashiyama Onsen, and attracts many tourists. In November 2004, Kitaaizu Village, Kitaaizu District, was incorporated, and in November 2005, Kawahigashi Town, Kawanuma District, was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 382.97 km2 . Population: 126,220 (2010).
