Primary production

…biological production is one of the most fundamental functions of life in an ecosystem. It is the driving force behind material circulation in the ecosystem. A distinction is made between primary production, carried out by autotrophs, and secondary production, carried out by heterotrophs.

The main production is by green plants (higher plants and algae, including cyanobacteria) that absorb solar energy through chlorophyll and synthesize organic matter from inorganic substances through photosynthesis.
