1824‐71 An Ottoman enlightenment thinker. Under the patronage of Mustafa Reşit Paşa, a promoter of the Tanzimat movement, he studied in Paris. From then on, he continued to work hard to introduce modern Western civilization to Turkey. In 1861, he and his comrades published the first privately run Turkish newspaper, The Translator of Aspects, and, influenced by Western literature, he also began to write new poetry in a style that was not based on classical poetry. Although he was constantly oppressed by Mustafa Reşit Paşa's political enemies, his influence on the thinkers and writers of the next generation was enormous.
