…(1) Characteristics of print media The first newspaper printed in colonial America is said to have been Public Occurrences, published by Benjamin Harris on September 25, 1690. The first distinctive feature of American journalism is that newspapers became popular at an extremely early stage. The first newspaper was the penny newspaper The New York Sun, published by Benjamin Day in 1833, but the prototype of the modern newspaper was formed from the end of the 19th century to the 20th century. In other words, during the period between the Spanish-American War (1898) and the fierce competition (yellow journalism) between J. Pulitzer's World (owned since 1883) and W. R. Hearst's New York Journal (owned since 1895), modern newspaper characteristics such as circulation in the millions, advertising revenue, the formation of a network of small papers and magazines by large capital, and sensationalism were born. …

It was marketed as a penny paper, costing just 1 cent, in contrast to the quality papers that had previously cost 4-6 cents. Its content focused on crime, gossip and other social topics, and it was well received by the public as a “cheap and interesting” newspaper, different from the politically-focused newspapers of the time. It became the prototype of early popular newspapers. …
