[France] A law enacted by the National Assembly in June 1791 during the French Revolution. [England] A British law that banned the formation of labor unions in 1799. In order to protect the interests of the bourgeoisie, it prohibited workers from organizing, taking oaths, and making wage agreements, and bound workers until 1864. It is called the Le Chapelier Law after the person who proposed it. In Britain, as the Industrial Revolution progressed, conflicts between labor and management intensified, and labor disputes became frequent. In response, the government banned both labor and employer unions. However, this was ineffective because laborers resisted by forming organizations such as the Friendly Society, and employers also resisted by joining forces with radicals in Parliament, and the ban was abolished in 1824.
