Italian Catholic political party founded by L. Sturzo in 1919. It advocated reformist policies such as decentralization, land reform, and education reform, based on Christian democracy. It achieved good results in the general elections of 1919 and 1921, and participated in coalition governments. However, a left-right conflict arose within the party, with the former calling for cooperation with the Socialist Party, while the latter, with the support of the Pope and the Church, wanted to accept Fascism conditionally. As a result, the party's activities were sluggish, and in 1926 it was ordered to be dissolved by Mussolini. It was later re-established in 1942 under the name Christian Democrats, but in January 1994 it changed its name back to the Italian People's Party. In 1995, under the leadership of Romano Prodi, former president of the Italian Industrial Reconstruction Agency, the party organized the Olive Tree League, which defeated the center-right coalition in the 1996 elections for both houses of parliament, forming a coalition government with Prodi as prime minister. Its official newspaper is Il Popolo. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
