Bemba people - Bemba tribe (English spelling)
The Babemba, also known as the Awemba, are the largest of the matrilineal Central Bantu-speaking peoples. They live in the highlands and surrounding areas of northeastern Zambia, with an estimated population of over 2 million. They are thought to be descendants of the Luba Empire. They form a centralized state ruled by a king who is also a priest, and each region is ruled by a member of the royal family as a chief, and is divided into the classes of nobility and commoners. There is a dowry system, and polygamous joint families are initially married with the wife's residence. There are 40 totemic matrilineal clans that do not have a regional identity and form exogamy units. They practice slash-and-burn cultivation of millet, and their villages of 30-50 huts are moved every 4-5 years. In the 1960s and 1970s, many of the men went to work in the mining areas in the south.
