An atoll on the northeastern tip of Kiribati. It is also called Butaritari Island. The inhabitants are Micronesian and produce copra. Along with Tarawa Island to the south, it was the site of a fierce battle between the United States and Japan during World War II. 11.7 km2 . 1,798 people (2010).
