A former town in Ninohe County in northern Iwate Prefecture. It occupies the midstream of the Appi River, a tributary of the Mabechi River, and is covered with vast forests and plains. The Hachinohe Expressway passes through the town. It produces rice and tobacco leaves, and also grows vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes. Dairy farming is also popular. 岩手県北部,二戸(にのへ)郡の旧町。馬淵(まべち)川の支流安比(あっぴ)川中流部を占め,山林と原野が広く,八戸自動車道が通じる。米,葉タバコを産し,キュウリやトマトの野菜栽培も行う。酪農も盛ん。浄法寺塗を特産する。2006年1月二戸市へ編入。179.70km2。5497人(2003)。
