Asphalt - Asphalt (English spelling)

A type of bitumen. There is naturally occurring asphalt and petroleum asphalt produced from petroleum, the latter of which is called asphalt in Japan. In Europe it is often called bitumen. Asphalt is a black solid or semi-solid substance whose main components are complex hydrocarbons, with a solid component called asphaltene dispersed in an oily component called maltene. Natural asphalt is produced in an almost pure state, so it can be used as it is when dug up. In Japan, there are records of its use as a civil engineering and building material as early as the 7th century.

There are two types of petroleum asphalt: straight asphalt and blown asphalt. Straight asphalt is obtained as a residue from the reduced pressure distillation of crude oil, and has high elongation and adhesion, with a softening point usually below 65°C. Blown asphalt is produced by blowing air into straight asphalt heated to about 260°C, and subjecting it to oxidation, polymerization, condensation, etc. It is harder than straight asphalt and has a higher softening point. It also has high elasticity and impact resistance, and its hardness does not change much with temperature.

In 2007, the annual production of asphalt in Japan was about 2 million tons, with most of it being straight asphalt and only a few percent being blown asphalt. Straight asphalt is mainly used for road paving. More than 80% of the paved roads in Japan are asphalt pavements, and their service life is usually considered to be about 10 years. It is also used for airport paving. Blown asphalt is mainly used for waterproofing. That is, asphalt is soaked into or applied to raw materials to make waterproof paper, waterproof boards, and waterproof felt for packaging or construction. It is also used as an adhesive to attach various blocks and boards to floors, taking advantage of its adhesiveness. Other uses include resistance to water, acids, and alkalis, moderate thermoplasticity, and excellent electrical insulation, so it is widely used in the electrochemical industry for batteries, capacitors, etc. It is also being attempted to be used as an adhesive for charcoal briquettes.

瀝青(れきせい)の一種。天然に産する天然アスファルトと石油から製造される石油アスファルトがあるが、日本では後者をアスファルトといっている。ヨーロッパではビチューメンbitumenということが多い。アスファルトは黒色の固体または半固体の物質で、主成分は複雑な炭化水素であり、アスファルテンという固体成分がマルテンという油状成分中に分散したものである。天然アスファルトはほぼ純粋な状態で産出するので、掘り出したままで使用できる。日本ではすでに7世紀に土木建築材料などに使用された記録がある。

　石油アスファルトにはストレートアスファルトとブローンアスファルトの2種がある。ストレートアスファルトは原油の減圧蒸留において残留物として得られるもので、伸度と粘着力が大きく、軟化点は通常65℃以下である。ブローンアスファルトは、約260℃に加熱したストレートアスファルトに空気を吹き込み、酸化、重合、縮合などをさせて製造したもので、ストレートアスファルトより硬く、軟化点も高い。また弾性、衝撃抵抗が大きく、温度による硬さの変化も小さい。

　日本におけるアスファルトの2007年（平成19）の生産量は年間約200万トンであり、大部分はストレートアスファルトで、ブローンアスファルトは数％にすぎない。ストレートアスファルトは主として道路舗装用に使用されている。日本の舗装道路の80％以上はアスファルト舗装であり、通常、供用寿命は10年程度と考えられている。また、空港の舗装にも用いられている。ブローンアスファルトはおもに防水加工用に使用する。すなわち、包装あるいは建築に用いる防水紙、防水板、防水フェルトをつくるために、原材にアスファルトをしみ込ませたり塗布したりする。また、粘着性を利用して、各種ブロック、板を床に張り付けるための接着剤としても用いられる。そのほかの用途としては、水、酸、アルカリに強く、適度の熱可塑性をもち、電気絶縁性に優れているので、電池、コンデンサーなど電気化学工業で広く用いられている。また、練炭の粘着剤としての利用も試みられている。
