Saito Sanki - Saito Sanki

Haiku poet. Born May 15, 1900 in Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture. His real name was Takanao. He graduated from the Japan Dental College. While working as the head of the dental department at Tokyo Kyoritsu Hospital, he discovered the literary magazine "Koumatou" and submitted his haiku to Hino Sojo's column, becoming a rising star in the emerging haiku movement. In January 1935 (Showa 10), he joined the literary magazine "Shikan", and in the same year he joined the literary magazine "Tobira" and joined "Kyoto University Haiku". He carved out his own unique realm of haiku with poems such as "The cold sea is like a water pillow" and "The boy of arithmetic secretly cried in the summer". In 1940, he joined the emerging haiku general magazine "Tenka", but was implicated in a case of haiku suppression and arrested. After World War II, in 1947 (Showa 22), he participated in the founding of the Modern Haiku Association. He also supported Yamaguchi Seishi and launched the magazine "Tenro" (1948), becoming its editor-in-chief. At the same time, he also presided over the separate magazines "Raikou" and "Gekiranami". In 1977, he founded "Dangai". In 1982, he became editor-in-chief of the general magazine "Haiku". In 1986, he participated in the founding of the Haiku Poets Association. He died of cancer on April 1, 1962. His haiku collections include "Flag" (1940), "Peaches in the Night" (1948), "Today" (1951), and "Transformation" (1962. Posthumously, he was awarded the 2nd Haiku Poets Association Award). Postwar haiku include "Middle age, the peach of the night seen from afar" and "The red fire laughed loudly, but today it is black".
