Bugaku costume - Bugaku costume
The costumes used in Japanese gagaku music can be broadly divided into dance costumes for the traditional Japanese utamai (singing and dancing), gagaku costumes, and bugaku costumes, which are generally collectively referred to as bugaku costumes.
[Dance costumes]
Kabuki and dance are Shinto ritual arts such as Kagura (Mikagura), Yamato Mai, Azuma Asobi, Kume Mai, Fuzoku Mai, and Gosechi No Mai. The Ninjo Mai costume used in Mikagura is a sokutai (traditional Japanese formal attire) made of white cloth with a kiseigo (traditional Japanese fine cloth) pattern, a ken'ei (wrapped cord), a oi-kake (robe with a red ribbon), a red okuchi (red large opening), a aka no hitoe (single layered garment), an ue no hakama (front trousers), a shitasane (back trousers), a kiyo (hem), and a half-sleeve (half-arm). They wear a formal attire such as a kimono, a forget-me-not, a robe (a ketttekiho - a robe that is left open at the sides), a sekitai (a belt), a hiogi (a folding fan), a tatougami (paper for folding), and a scepter. They also wear a sixth-rank sword with black lacquer and silver fittings, and thread sandals (cheeks made of thread).
