[1] [noun] Vast plain. Oonu. *Kojiki (712), Vol. 1: "He also ordered the shooting of narikabura ( blowfish ) into Oono and the retrieval of the arrows." [2][1] A place name in the central-eastern part of Fukui Prefecture, in the western part of the Oono Basin. Former castle town of the Doi clan with a fief of 40,000 koku. The textile industry is thriving. Kuzuryu Gorge and Mana Gorge are located here. Established as a city in 1954. [2] A district in the northeastern part of Fukui Prefecture. A mountainous area in the upper reaches of the Kuzuryu River. [3] A district in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture. A mountainous area between the Hida Mountains and the Hakusan (Kaetsu) Mountains. Except for Shirakawa Village, it is now part of Takayama City. [4] A district that was in the southern part of Oita Prefecture. A plateau area in the upper and middle reaches of the Oono River. It corresponds to parts of Bungo-Ono City and Usuki City.

[1] 〘名〙広大な野原。おおぬ。※古事記（712）上「亦鳴鏑(なりかぶら)を大野(おほの)の中に射入れて、其の矢を採ら令めたまひき」[2][一] 福井県中東部、大野盆地西部の地名。土居氏四万石の旧城下町。繊維工業が盛ん。九頭龍(くずりゅう)峡、真名峡などがある。昭和二九年（一九五四）市制。[二] 福井県の北東部の郡。九頭龍川の上流域の山間地帯。[三] 岐阜県の北部の郡。飛騨山脈と白山（加越）山地にはさまれた山林地帯。白川村を除き、現在は高山市域。[四] 大分県の南部にあった郡。大野川の上・中流域の高原地帯。豊後大野市と臼杵市の一部にあたる。
