A state founded by Armenians in the Cilicia region of southeastern Asia Minor. 1080-1375. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Armenians migrated en masse to the Taurus (now Taurus) Mountains, where the Greek population had become sparse due to Arab invasions. The leader of one such group, the House of Reuben, seized all of Cilicia from the Byzantine Empire and established a new state while maintaining close ties with the countries established in the occupied territories by the Crusaders. The kingdom's heyday came during the reign of Lebon II (1187-1219), who was the first to adopt the title of king (1199). Agriculture and handicrafts developed, and the capital Sis and the port city of Ayas flourished as transit points for trade between the East and the West, giving birth to the Cilician school of painting.
