Small denomination banknotes issued by the Meiji government. Most Dajokan notes were over 1 ryo, which made transactions inconvenient, so these were issued in four denominations: 2 bu, 1 bu, 2 shu, and 1 shu. 7.5 million ryo were issued between October 1869 and October 1878, and they were in circulation until August 1878. They were initially issued in exchange for Dajokan notes, and the Dajokan notes that were collected were supposed to be shredded, but the new government fell into financial difficulties following the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, so the planned shredding did not take place.
