Mundy, J.

[history]
The precursors of 19th-century program music include the 14th-century vocal piece caccia (meaning "hunt"), which contains imagery elements depicting bird songs, and the 15th-century vocal piece battaglia (meaning "battle"), which depicts war scenes. In contrast to these vocal program music techniques, the instrumental works include the 17th-century Nightingale Suite by Alessandro Poglietti (?-1683) and virginal pieces depicting lightning and thunder by John Mundy (c. 1555-1630). Many program music pieces were also created during the Baroque period, including J. Kuhnau's Biblical Sonata, which describes stories from the Bible, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and JS Bach's Capriccio On the Departure of a Beloved Brother.
