Born on November 30, 1943. Self-taught in astronomy, he discovered five comets using a telescope he built himself. The most famous of these is Comet Ikeya-Seki, which he discovered independently with Tsutomu Seki in 1965. In 2002, he discovered the sixth, Comet Ikeya-Chang. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture.
