The border between North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) and South Korea, located near the 38th parallel. It is also called the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) or the Military Demarcation Line. It is the de facto border established by the Korean War Armistice Agreement concluded on July 27, 1953. A demilitarized zone 2km wide is set up on both sides of the border. Many land mines are buried in the zone, and security is extremely strict on both sides. While a concrete barrier is set up on the South Korean side, it has been discovered that North Korea has excavated several tunnels to allow spies to infiltrate South Korea. Panmunjom, the site of talks between North and South Korea, is located on the Military Demarcation Line. The armistice agreement did not specify a maritime boundary, and South Korea established the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea during the Syngman Rhee administration. North Korea claims that the NLL is an illegal line that the U.S. military unilaterally drew within our territorial waters in disregard of the armistice agreement and international law, and has established a maritime military demarcation line south of the NLL by extending the military demarcation line. DMZ(Demilitarized Zone)、軍事分界線ともいう。
