Shigemasa Ikeda
Year of death: December 12, 1899
Year of birth: Tenpo 10.10.11 (1839.11.16)
He was the lord of Okayama Domain during the late Edo period. His father was Tokugawa Nariaki, the lord of Mito Domain. He was the younger brother of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and Matsudaira Takeaki, the lord of Hamada Domain, and the older brother of Ikeda Yoshinori, the lord of Tottori Domain. His childhood name was Kuromaro, and his pen name was Rakuzan. In 1863, he was adopted by Ikeda Yoshimasa, and was given the first part of the name of Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi and changed his name to Shigemasa. In the administration of the domain, he worked to promote lower-ranking samurai and to develop modern military equipment. In the political situation at the end of the Edo period, he took a position of revering the Emperor and expelling the barbarians, but he struggled to be caught between the Imperial Court and the Shogunate. While he requested a delay in his personal expedition to expel the barbarians, he was opposed to the Choshu Expedition. When the Battle of Toba-Fushimi broke out, he retired and adopted Ikeda Masaaki (later Akimasa), the lord of the Kamogata branch domain (Okayama Prefecture). After the Meiji Restoration, he served as the head of the Danjodai and after his retirement, he worked to revive Noh.
