Igune

...The main house was built behind the center of the enclosure, and the open space to the south of the main house was used as a workshop or drying area, and was called "kado" or "kadoniwa." Some peasant houses in flat rural areas had forests on the north to northwest sides, where bamboo, miscellaneous trees, pine, and cedar were planted for the purpose of wind protection, heat protection, fire protection, and for gathering fuel and timber. These were called "igune" (Tohoku), "kune" (Kanto), "tsuijimatsu" (Izumo), and other names in various regions. In the construction of castle towns as military, political, and economic bases for feudal lords, samurai residences were placed around the castle, and town residences that were exempt from annual tax were placed around them. Town houses were arranged according to occupation according to the town division to form towns for the same trade.
