A village in Seta County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 11,052 (1995). It is located on the southern slope of Mount Akagi, east of Maebashi City. Paddy fields are found along the banks of the Kasu River, which has its source in Mount Akagi's crater lake, Konuma, and fields spread out at the foot of the mountain. Until the Gunma Irrigation Canal was completed in 1970, the town relied on the Kasu River and reservoirs as its water source and was constantly plagued by water shortages. The Konuma Irrigation Canal is known for its strict water management practices. In recent years, greenhouse horticulture for vegetables and flowers has also been carried out there. Nakanosawa on the mountainside was a reclaimed area after World War II, and there is a large complex of greenhouses for cyclamen. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
