Spanish dancers, especially women, were already famous in Roman times, and were written about in poems by poets such as Martialis and Juvenal. They danced freely while playing the crusmata (a castanet-like instrument), and were welcomed by Romans. Thus, the origins of dance in Spain are very ancient, but today's classical Spanish dance can be said to be based on the court dances and civil society dances that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries after the Renaissance.
