Princess Kasuganoyamada

Princess Kasuganoyamada
Year of birth: Unknown
She was the Empress of Emperor Ankan in the first half of the 6th century. She was the daughter of Emperor Ninken and Nukanohizume (Hisoku), the daughter of Nukanokimi no Musume (Oonukano Musume, Nukawakako no Irorime). She was also known as Yamada Akami no Hime, Yamada no Omi no Hime, Akami no Hime, and Kasuga no Oda no Irorime. The Kasugano Yamada Princess, who is described in the Nihon Shoki as the daughter of Emperor Kinmei, is the same person, and the confusion may have arisen due to an error in the tradition. In the autumn of the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Keitai (513), she had a night of pure talk with Prince Muka no Oe (Emperor Ankan) and exchanged poems. The following year, she lamented that the prince was to blame for her not having a child, and in order to leave her name behind, she was given the Sofu Tonokura (Sahogawa-cho, Nara City) by the Emperor as a proxy. Before ascending to the throne, Emperor Kinmei tried to hand over government affairs to his mother's younger sister, Kasugano Yamada Princess, who was the Empress of his older brother Emperor Ankan, on the grounds that he was young and inexperienced in government affairs. However, the princess declined and instead suggested that the prince take the throne. If she had accepted, a female emperor like Princess Iitoyo or Empress Suiko would have become a reality, but she ended up being a phantom emperor. The Nihon Shoki states that her tomb was buried together with the tomb of Emperor Ankan (Furuichi Takaya Hills), but the Engishiki states that she was buried in a different tomb, the Furuichi Takaya Tomb (a circular burial mound in Hachimanyama, Furuichi, Habikino City).
