This refers to Buddhist scriptures published at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara from the end of the Heian period to the end of the Muromachi period. It is called the Kasuga version and not the Kofuku-ji version because many of the published scriptures were dedicated to Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the guardian deity of Kofuku-ji Temple. The contents are the Joyushikiron and its commentaries, which are necessary for scholarly monks to study. The Joyushikiron (owned by Shosoin Seigozo), published by Kanzo in 1088 (Kanji 2), is known as the oldest surviving work with a clear publication date, but many other sutras and commentaries have been published, including the 100-volume Yogacara-bhūmi-śāstra published in 1213 (Kenryaku 3). The Kasuga edition follows the same format used in copying sutras since the Nara period, with its single-line spacing and calligraphy style, and this format has since become the standard for publishing sutras in Japan. Among the Kasuga editions, those from the Kamakura period are particularly excellent in both quality and quantity, and are characterized by thick paper, the color of the lacquer ink, and a calligraphy style that exudes power. Many woodblocks still remain, starting with the "Seijiki Ronshuki" from 1195 (Kenkyu 6).
