...This type of small cloak was passed down to the Germanic and Gaulish peoples. The cucullus worn by the Gallic people and monks was derived from the Roman paenula, a round hooded cloak. From around the end of the 2nd century, a new type of tunic called the dalmatica appeared, with the body and sleeves cut in a straight line and large sleeves, and it would survive for a long time as Catholic ceremonial clothing.
