Squid Mushroom - Squid Mushroom

This mushroom belongs to the Basidiomycete family of the order Pterygota, and the family Acanthaceae. Its strange shape, reminiscent of a squid standing upside down with its legs spread, is eye-catching. The leg-like parts are called arms, and there are 7-15 of them, each about 1-6 cm long and 5-10 cm high, spreading out in all directions from the top of the body, which is 2-3 cm thick. The whole mushroom is white, but the inside of the arms is black-brown, has a strong foul odor, and is mucus-filled. This mucus is a collection of spores. The whole mushroom is made of brittle spongy material, and the body is hollow. The base of the body is wrapped in a membranous bag. The young mushroom is compressed and wrapped inside this bag. The whole bag is a spherical mass resembling a turtle egg, 3-4 cm in diameter. It can grow in clusters after rice husks have been discarded. It is distributed from Southeast Asia to Japan. Some mushrooms are entirely red, and are called A. rubra La Bill.

担子菌類、スッポンタケ目アカカゴタケ科のキノコ。脚(あし)を広げて逆立ちするイカを思わせる奇妙な形で目を引く。脚に似た部分を腕といい、数は7～15本で、長さ1～6センチメートルほど、高さ5～10センチメートルで、それが太さ2～3センチメートルの胴の上端から四方に広がる。全体は白いが、腕の内面は黒褐色で強い悪臭を放ち、粘液を帯びる。この粘液は胞子の集まりである。全体はもろい海綿質で、胴は中空。胴の根元は膜質のふくろ（つぼ）で包まれる。幼菌はこのふくろの中に圧縮されて包まれる。ふくろ全体はカメの卵に似た球塊であり、径3～4センチメートル。もみ殻を捨てたあとなどに群生することがある。東南アジアから日本にかけて分布する。全体が紅色状になるものがあり、アカイカタケA. rubra La Bill.とよばれる。
